Donald Trump Stealing His ‘Fire and Fury’ Line From Captain America Villain Red Skull Is False

President Donald Trump saying that he would unleash fire and fury like the world has never seen on North Korea are not comments that were plagiarized from a Captain America comic book character. Trump’s comments were in response to North Korea’s successful tests in recent months of intercontinental ballistic missiles that could reach the U.S. mainland.

However, Trump did not plagiarize his fire and fury comment from Captain America comic book villain Red Skull. On Aug. 8, 2017, Trump issued a warning to North Korea, saying that they would be met with fire and fury if they made any more threats against the United States:

North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen he has been very threatening beyond a normal state. They will be met with fire, fury and frankly power the likes of which this world has never seen before, he said.

Shorty after Trump made these comments, an image purportedly showing the Captain America villain Red Skull using a nearly identical phrase began being widely circulated on social media along with the claim that Trump had stolen his threatening remarks from the comic book character.

Here are some examples of people sharing the alleged connection between Trump and Red Skull.

While this image was created from the cover art of Captain America #370, the speech bubble was a modern creation that was added after Trump made his comment.

The fire and fury image was created by D.M. Higgins, and it was originally posted to the @PresVillain Twitter account, a parody account that puts Trump’s words in the mouths of comic book villains such as Red Skull. Although Higgins’ work is occasionally shared as if it shows prognostication or plagiarism, the Twitter account posts reminders every so often that its images are digitally altered.
